What if I must shave
with a razor?
There are times when we will have to shave with a razor. As
mentioned in the post “TheMost Effective Ways to Prevent Razor Bumps for Black Men,” we may be in a
situation where we do not have our electric clippers available to us. When we
find ourselves in that position, we will need use a razor. The question now
becomes, what is the best razor to use to prevent razor bumps? You may start to
think that I’m going to recommend some type of expensive, hi-tech razor to
shave with. If so, you’re wrong! The best type of razor to shave with in
circumstances like these are some very inexpensive single-blade Bic razors!
Yes! Cheap Bic razors are among the best to shave with when trying to prevent
razor bumps and using a disposable razor.
Why use a Cheap Bic?
Using the cheap single blade Bic razors won’t give you a
very close shave. As you already know, we are not really trying to achieve a
clean shave while keeping razor bump free. We are trying to achieve the look of
a clean shave. Using an inexpensive single-blade disposable razor will allow you
to achieve this fairly effortlessly.
Things to keep in
mind while shaving with a disposable razor.
It is very important that you do not shave against the grain
with a disposable razor ever! Shaving against the grain will create those sharp
points at the tip of your facial hair that will easily pierce the skin and
cause razor bumps. Also, it is very important that you do not press hard when
using a disposable razor. The pressure needs to be very minimal – as if you are
just using the razor to wipe the moisture from you face. Pressing too firmly
may cause the hairs to get cut below the surface of the skin, significantly
increasing the changes of developing in-grown hairs and razor bumps. The third
thing we want to keep in mind when using a disposable razor is to keep the
shaving cream usage to a minimum. Lathering up too much can cause you to
accidentally press too hard to shave through the cream. Also, shaving cream
allows the blade to slide too easily on the face and cut the hairs closer than
what you had intended.
Basically, when you are shaving with a disposable razor, you
want to mimic “dry-shaving”. However, you do not want your face to be
completely dry. You want very light shaving cream or just water applied to your
face when attempting this method. Also, since you are shaving with the grain, you
do not need as much lubrication for the razor to glide comfortably.
Letting your face
breathe.
After utilizing this method of shaving, it is important to
then skip the next day of shaving to allow your facial hair to grow out just a
bit. After that, resume shaving only with clippers for the next several days to
allow your face and facial hair to return to it normal state.
I’ve had to use this method several times over the years and
it can be very useful. Occasionally, I’ve developed one or two bumps at first,
but they go away soon after I resume shaving with clippers! For more tips and reviews, join
